Matthew David Stanton died unexpectedly and tragically Sunday morning, August 26. He was 48 years old. Matt is survived by his sons, Zack and Noah. He adored his children and was immensely proud to be their Dad. They were his heart. Matt also is survived by his parents, Kathy and Larry Stanton (Great Bend); by Jessica; by his brother Andrew (Marcia) (Pittsburgh); by his Aunts Chris, Barb, and Judy and his Uncle Bruce; by Sarah, Gavin, and Celeste; by nieces, nephews and cousins; by co-workers, students and friends who loved him.
Matt graduated from Seton Catholic Central High School, East Stroudsburg University (BS), and Cortland University (MS). He was a teacher who loved his students and the entire Chenango Valley family. In the summer months he worked as a ranger at Chenango Valley State Park.
Matt was a true sports fan who loved the Virginia Cavaliers, Toronto Blue Jays, and most of all, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a passionate and talented basketball coach who led his teams to multiple undefeated seasons and STAC divisional titles during his career. He relished the challenge of creating a true team from a group of young men and valued the camaraderie and friendship of his fellow coaches. Matt loved to have teams that played the right way, won the right way, and lost the right way. He was intensely focused on helping each individual player, regardless of their God-given talent, to realize his own potential. Matt was keenly focused on highlighting those lessons his players could carry from the hardwood throughout their lives. Matt brought joy and laughter to his family and friends. He will be missed terribly and remembered forever.
A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, August 30, 2018, 3pm at Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson. Calling hours will follow at the funeral home from 4-6pm.
