

Najla Farhart passed away on February 24, 2013, at the age of 84 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Gloversville, New York, to Mary and Fred Farhart on September 1, 1928. She graduated from Gloversville High School in 1946 and attended SUNY Cortland, receiving her B.A. in 1951. After graduating from college, Naj moved to Binghamton to accept a teaching position in the Chenango School District. She taught 6th grade there for over 30 years until her retirement in 1983. Naj made a lasting impression on many of her students, as is evidenced by the numerous letters, calls and visits she received from them over the years. Following retirement, Naj became an avid golfer, and also enjoyed tennis, bowling and bridge. In addition, she spent summers at her cottage on Lake Petonia, where many happy memories were made and shared with her family and friends.
Naj is survived by her sister, Sister Lamese Farhart, CSJ, of Latham, New York, five nieces and nephews, eight grand nieces and grand nephews and four great grand nieces and great grand nephews, all of whom loved and cherished the time spent with their dear aunt. She also leaves behind many wonderful friends. Naj was predeceased by her parents, her sister Olga and her brother, Edward.
Friends may call at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home on Friday, March 1, from 4:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1031 Chenango St., at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 1301 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901 or Chenango Valley High School Guidance Office, in memory of Najla Farhart, 221 Chenango Bridge Road, Binghamton, NY 13901.
