Paul Monroe Westgate passed away peacefully on March 19, 2023 at home, while sitting in his comfy chair, and watching a Yankee Game. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor and served as a role model to all who knew him.
Paul was born on January 26, 1933, in Lakewood, Pennsylvania, where he grew up on a dairy farm. He was the sixth of seven children born to Arnold and Alice Westgate. He attended the Northern Wayne High School in Lakewood, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1951. As a young man, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force and then using the G.I. Bill, earned his Associates Degree in Electrical Technology from Broome County Technical Institute in 1960. Paul married his high school sweetheart, Lois A. Stanton, in 1952 and they celebrated their 67th anniversary the year she passed away.
Paul was a hard worker his entire life. After receiving his degree, he worked at the Endicott Coil Company and then for I.B.M., from which he retired. His paid jobs were only a small part of his industriousness. In his spare time he designed and built an extension on his home, fixed anything that had a motor, rewired the house, and took care of all home repairs. When Lois decided to go back to school, Paul added helping out with cooking and cleaning to his repertoire, to make it easier for her to attend college. And when Lois developed a kidney disease, he learned how to run her home dialysis equipment and was the most caring nurse to her until her death.
Paul really enjoyed traveling and visited many places, domestically and abroad.. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants and liked to play solitaire and pinochle. Paul became an excellent cook and was known for his signature dishes of “Chicken Pot Pie” and “Hot Dog Gravy over Mashed Vegetables.” He was active in the Lyceum program and was a seventeen year volunteer for the AARP Income Tax Assistance Program.
Paul is survived by his sisters Trudy Boas and Margaret Barber; his children David & Patricia E. Westgate, Michael Westgate, and Patricia L. Westgate & Kenneth Normile; grandchildren Daniel & Jenny Westgate, Stephen Westgate & Jessica Staelens, William Westgate, Jonathan & Alicia Westgate, and Isaac Normile & Frank Panzarino; and great-grandchildren Alexander, Nicholas, Braeleigh, Griffin, Sybil, and Oren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Alice (Lobez) Westgate; his wife, Lois (Stanton) Westgate; brothers Ralph and Elliot Westgate; and sisters Gladys Alger and Martha Cronise. He was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed by them all.
The family will receive friends at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 11am-12pm. A Funeral Service will follow at 12pm.
