Richard Thomas Nemcek went home to the arms of his family at the age of 93 on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Veterans Home in Oxford, NY. He was born in Johnson City, NY, on January 13, 1932, the youngest of 13 children born to Gaspar Nemcek and Mary Belancik-Nemcek.
Richard was predeceased by his parents; all of his sisters and brothers; and his two sons, Alan L. Nemcek (born Lassen) and Thomas E. Nemcek.
He is survived by his daughter from a first marriage, RosAnn Nemcek Wormuth; his stepdaughter from his marriage to Madeline E. Vroma, Joyce J. Lassen Clegg; his daughter-in-law, Peggy Nemcek (Thomas); six grandchildren: Melanie L. Pike Dalgliesh (Glenn), Krista L. Nemcek Cotich (Rich), Gretta L. Nemcek Hocsprung (Peter), Shawn C. Wormuth, Nicole M. Wormuth, and Connor F. Nemcek; nine great-grandchildren; and one and three-quarters great-great-grandchildren.
Richard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving medals for bravery, including a Purple Heart. He began working for IBM in 1966 and remained there until his retirement in 1994.
He played the tenor saxophone in many local bands, often alongside his brothers and nephews, who played various instruments. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and gardening, and he was talented in painting ceramics, and rug hooking. He was also a skilled cook, a barbecue extraordinaire, and was especially known in the family for his homemade pickles.
Richard and Madeline traveled extensively, including many RV camping adventures. They loved spending winters in Sarasota, Florida. While there, Richard auditioned for and was accepted into The Windjammers, a 500-piece orchestra that performed summer concerts across the country. Each concert was led by a different world-renowned conductor, playing concerts of classical music.
Richard is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many.
The family will recieve friends at the Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church, 918 Upper Front Street, Binghamton, NY on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 12-1pm with a Funeral Service to follow at 1pm. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
