Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ann “Nelly” McClean, nee McNally, grew up in a loving household as one of eight children. Ann spent graduated from the halls of Erasmus High School in Flatbush. Nelly met her loving husband, the late Roger when both were young teenagers often hanging out in their Brooklyn neighborhood.
After spending some years living in Brooklyn, the McCleans later moved to Mt. Sinai, New York, to expand their family, where they spent 50 years raising their children and watching their grandchildren grow on Autumn Drive.
Nelly was always a selfless and caring person, and her occupation was no different. After working for some time at Woodhaven (a nursing home for adults), Nelly spent the rest of her career at St. Charles Hospital on the postnatal/maternity ward as a nurse’s aide, where she truly enjoyed caring for mothers and their newborns.
Nelly loved the company of her sisters , brothers as well as all of the extended large family she had . They would visit and spend weekends on Long Island, playing cards enjoying the pool and barbecues which included many of the close knit friends on Autumn Drive.
Nelly was a crafty woman who especially enjoyed knitting and crocheting. If there was a new baby in the family you could always expect a hand-knit "Nelly special" blankets sweater, hats even baby socks to follow. Her family still cherishes her handmade gifts to this day, as they have been passed down from generation to generation.
She also loved the holidays and would hand-make her children’s Halloween costumes, as well as costumes for some of our neighborhood friends. Even made pilgrim outfits for her daughters in the late 1970s. At Christmas time, you could always expect the bright lights of the tree shining through the bay windows. She would spend countless days carefully wrapping each branch and perfectly arranging the ornaments. Christmas was always magical with our mom at the helm.
Nelly loved spending time with her family whether teaching tennis and ice skating basics, relaxing by the pool, or watching TV shows together.
Nelly and Roger spent their later years in Naples, Florida, treasuring visits from their children, grandchildren, siblings extended family and friends. All always welcome to what would be a great time filled with memories of laughter and love.
Nelly will always be remembered for her selflessness and caring nature, her calm demeanor, and her wonderful sense of humor that everyone loved. She always tried to instill patience and kindness in her children and those around her. She will be missed dearly, remembered fondly by all whose lives she touched.
