Edward Martin Lee, age 82, of Port Jefferson Station passed away on June 21, 2022, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on October 27, 1939, in Brooklyn to Nicholas and Mary Lee and was introduced to his big sister Anna, who was his biggest supporter and protector for life.
In 1959 he joined the United States Army and served as a military policeman; his most talked-about tour was in Okinawa, Japan. He completed his service to the country he loved in 1961 and soon after joined the New York City Police Department. During this time, he met the love of his life, Mary Rose, a teacher who he spied across the dance floor and knew one day he would make his wife. On November 30, 1968, they professed their never-ending love and even made the cover of the Sunday Daily News. Their family grew over the years and when asked about his proudest achievements, his answer was always his children. He was a crowd favorite with all their friends and became famous for his breakfasts and for setting an extra seat at the dinner table, just in case.
Ed was a big supporter of the community and very active in the Port Jefferson Elks. He served in many roles at the Elks and was very proud and honored to organize and lead Memorial Day and Flag Day ceremonies. He greatly enjoyed organizing track events for the kids in our local school districts and holiday parties for our veterans. Through his involvement, he gained lifelong friends who became his brothers and sisters. He was always looking for ways to help make our community better and build connections. These connections helped him when he fell ill, and this village supported him just like he had supported them. He always wanted people to know that they mattered, and he would greet people with, Happy Valentine’s Day, no matter what time of year. He truly felt that love and friendship should be celebrated year-round.
Ed was very proud of his Irish roots and loved telling stories of his childhood in Brooklyn. He was always ready to give directions to Coney Island, just in case.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Rose. He is the loving father of his daughter Mary and her husband Greg, and his sons Edward and his wife Marianne, Lawrence and his wife Jennifer, and Joseph and his wife Christina. He was blessed with seven amazing grandchildren, Caitlin, Jake, Shelby, Greg, Jackson, Joseph, and Palmer, who adored their grandfather and all his amazing tales.
A visitation for Edward will be held Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. Funeral Mass, Monday, June 27, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St Margaret of Scotland RC Church, 81 College Rd, Selden, New York 11784.
