George Spivak, 91, formerly of Bayside Queens NY, passed away on Friday, October 27th, 2017 at Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Community in South Setauket Long Island NY.

Born on June 11, 1926, in Brooklyn, NY to the late John Spivak and Margaret (Kawa) Spivak. Prior to his retirement, George was the Chairman of the Art Department at Newtown HS in Elmhurst, NY.

He is survived by his three sons, John Spivak of Garnet Valley, PA, Gus Spivak of Hockessin, DE, and Lawrence Spivak of Jamaica NY; along with extended family and friends.

Friends may call at the Casimir Funeral Home, Port Jefferson’s Station NY on Sunday, October 29, 2017 from 2-4 or 7-9 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held St Gerard Majella Church, Port Jefferson’s Station NY on Monday, October 29th, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.

I had Mr. Spivak for art...He was a great teacher and person. I learned so much from him especially about art history and the Newtown art collection...a real gentleman.

He helped me get the scholarship to the NY Phoenix Schools of Design, an eventual division of Pratt Institute, and actually helped in getting me switched to the art curriculum from the Engineering (mechanical drawing) at Newtown High School. Eventually became an artist for DC and Marvel, plus now work in Hollywood onscreen, as an artist, among other things (Castle police sketch artist for 5 seasons, on Always Sunny, SWAT, Revenge, Medium and more and court sketch artist on shows like People vs OJ, How To Get Away With Murder and others. No idea if he ever knew where I'd gone with it, but he was a sweetheart of a guy when I was at Newtown.
