

Gerard J. Donovan, a devoted brother, uncle, and passionate hockey fan, passed away on July 29, 2024, at the age of 62. Born on August 29, 1961, in Brooklyn, NY, to Sean and Catherine Donovan of Ireland, Gerard was a lifelong resident of New York, known for his kindness, warm heart and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends.
Gerard was the beloved brother of Ann Rubin and her husband Mitchell, and the cherished uncle of Serdjan and Andrew Rubin. His life was deeply intertwined with his family, and his greatest joy was spending time with his nephews. Gerard not only delighted in their company but also shared his love of hockey with them, teaching them the sport he adored and attending their games with enthusiasm.
An ardent supporter of the NY Islanders, Gerard shared this passion with his nephews who are now lifelong Islanders fans as well. It is a family legacy. He continued to be in touch with the friends he made throughout his life, as an Air Traffic Controller at LaGuardia Tower and the New York TRACON, and at various rinks in the tri-state area. He treasured these relationships, in sickness and in health. In turn, his family, friends and colleagues have truly valued his friendship. Gerard’s affection for animals, for his and the family’s cats and dogs was another testament to his compassionate nature.
Gerard’s spirit will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His life of kindness, dedication and love will live on among his family and friends as a shining light that showed a life well lived. His soul shone brightly and touched us all. He will be with us always.
A visitation for Gerard will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at O. B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. Funeral mass on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 9:30 AM at St James Roman Catholic Church, 429 NY-25A, East Setauket, NY 11733. Interment to follow at St. Charles Cemetery, 2015 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, New York 11785
