

Gregory J. Holmes of Stony Brook, New York, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on December 11, 1947, in Manhattan, New York, Gregory lived a full and devoted life centered around his greatest joy—his family.
Gregory was the beloved husband of 56 years to his cherished wife, Frances. Their love story began in high school, and together they shared 61 wonderful years of companionship, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
He was a loving and devoted father to Jennifer Holmes (Brad Arrington), Stephanie Holmes (Chris Kelley), Carolyn Lee (Tim), and Gregory Holmes (Kerry). Gregory was a proud and cherished grandfather to Thomas Arrington, Sean Kelley, Caitlin Lee, Kathryn Arrington, Anna Kelley, Alex Lee, Ryan Kelley, Matthew Holmes, Liam Holmes, Abby Lee, and Nick Holmes, all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
Gregory was an adored brother to James Holmes (fiancée Meredith Simonetti) and was predeceased by his siblings Jacqueline Denninger, Russell Holmes, and Debbie DeVincentis. He was also predeceased by his loving parents, James and Lucille Holmes.
Family was everything to Gregory. He treasured every moment spent with those he loved most, creating lasting memories that will be held close by all who knew him.
In his younger years, Gregory was an accomplished athlete, playing baseball, football, and basketball in high school. His passion for sports continued into adulthood, where he dedicated his time to coaching baseball and his daughter’s basketball team for Three Village, leaving a lasting impact on many young athletes. He also loved to play golf, enjoying both the game itself and the time spent on the course with family and friends, and was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees.
Gregory had a deep love for history, especially battlefields, and found great joy in learning and exploring the past. He also enjoyed boating and cherished the many trips he took with Frances. Together, they traveled extensively, visiting Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Alaska, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, and making many special trips to Disney over the years.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 10:45 AM at St. James RC Church, 429 Route 25A, East Setauket, NY 11733.
Gregory will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his love, dedication, and the legacy he leaves behind in his family.
