The hills were hard to climb
He gently closed her loving eyes
And whispered “Peace be Thine”
Hazel Grant of Coram, New York, was born on December 28, 1942 in Bright Hill, St Patrick’s Christ Church, Barbados, to the late Evelyn Eugenie Whitehall and Ivan Woods. She received her early Christian training at St. Patrick’s Anglican Church (B’dos) where she was baptized and confirmed. She was an active member of The Anglican Young People’s Association.
She attended The Girls Foundation School. Upon Completion of her Formal education, she was employed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the Medical Records Department, and later at Coopers and Lybrand Accounting Firm as a Secretary to Grenville Phillips Senior.
Hazel lived in Rogers Rd, the Ivy, with her mother Evelyn. She later immigrated to the United States in 1972 and settled in Long Island where she married her Fiancé Herbert Grant (Deceased). They are the proud parents of two sons, Dwayne and Andrew Grant.
She was employed at John T Mather Hospital in Medical Staff Administration for over 30 years, until her retirement in 2017. Hazel was adored and respected by all her colleagues.
Her Family and friends in Barbados all described her as a lovely sweet soul, who endeared many to her. She loved all living beings, and has owned dogs, cats, goats, and chickens throughout her life.
She was always a devout Mom, who saw that her children were actively involved in Soccer, Basketball, and other outdoor activities. She introduced them to the arts and was constantly on the go keeping them involved in extra curriculum activities. Hazel was awarded Team Mother by the Longwood Youth Sports Association (Wild Cats) for her dedication and devotion throughout the entirety of the team. She was very family oriented. She loved dancing, reading, and gardening and spent much time pursuing her passions. Hazel knew how to brighten any room just by walking into it. She was genuinely kindhearted, and she showed such compassion by the way she cared for her own Mom.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her sons, Dwayne and Andrew, her daughters in law, Cilene & Lisa, her grandchildren Alyssa, Aurora and Cameron. Her siblings, Rodney Gittens (London), Gloria Amin (Dolly) (Barbados), Myrna Calixet (Florida), Vincent Lucas (St. Vincent), along with many Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins, her special cousin Eleanor Harewood , The Harris, Lucas, Braithwaite, Squires, Collymore, Chelthams, Morris Hood, Walters, Kellmans, Wynette, and Waithe Families, a host of dear friends and work colleagues too numerous to mention.
Know that you are all are loved and much appreciated. May she rest in peace and rise in Glory
