Helen S. Smith

Born 7/15/1919 in Clifton, NJ, she passed away on 6/20/2014 with her family at her side. Long time resident of Oldfield South, NY (winters) and West Point Island in Lavallette, NJ (summers). For the past three years she resided at Jefferson’s Ferry in South Setauket, NY.

Predeceased by her husband Howard W. Smith, parents Lillian B. & Harry V. Snyder, brother Harry Snyder, Jr., daughter-in law Valerie Smith, son-in-law James O’Connor and great-grandson Preston Smith.

Beloved mother of five children – Susan S. Wilhelm (Jerry) of Louisville, KY; B. Christy Kenney (Edward) of Queensbury, NY; Patricia Bode O’Connor of Port Jefferson, NY; Lindsay A. Smith (Jo Ann) of Westerville, OH and Bradford M. Smith (Lisa) of Elkton, MD. Also survived by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Helen was a graduate of Beaver College where she received a teaching degree and then taught elementary school until she married. She worked in the library at SUNY at Stony Brook for 30 years where she catalogued books. She cherished her friends and associations as a member of Setauket Presbyterian Church where she served faithfully for many years. She also was an accomplished homemaker, crafter, golfer and bridge player who continued these activities well into her early 90’s. She was a dear friend to many and will truly be missed.

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 12 at the Setauket Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the service in the church garden. Helen’s family will greet friends following the service in the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory should be directed to the Deacon’s Fund at Setauket Presbyterian Church, 5 Caroline Avenue, Setauket, LI, NY 11733.
