Jeannine Marie Downey

Downey – Jeannine, of Stony Brook, New York passed away on October 10, 2024. Predeceased by her husband, Thomas Downey, she was known for her kindness, love of animals, and passion for dance. She touched and influenced many lives during her 95 years. She was an amazing mother to Jan (Art), Ginger (Gary), Lynne (Chuck), and Tom (Laura); and cherished Mama to Ryan (Megan), Tegan (John), Tyler, Dana, Kyle (Kristina), Reed, and Kristen. She is also Great Mama to Peyton, Greyson, Ryder, Jackson, and Kyla. She was predeceased by her dear brother, Ed.

Jeannine was born November 22,1929 to Virginia and Edson Coleman. She started dancing at the age of two and as an accomplished dancer she graduated high school from the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan. Jeannine was recognized for her talents in ballet, jazz, and tap. She shares an alumni status with many legends in the world of dance. After high school she toured the United States in productions and dance companies that highlighted her success and dedication. In 1950, she danced her way into the heart of Thomas Downey. Ballroom dancing became their shared passion. After he returned from his tour in the Korean War, their feet never touched the ground until 2017 when Tom passed away.

When not dancing, Jeannine raised four children; worked at Saint Charles BOSCES in Port Jefferson assisting and caring for children with special needs; and despite protests from Tom, she rescued, rehabilitated, and kept a menagerie of beloved pets. She was a powerhouse of warmth, strength, and vitality. She’ll be tremendously missed by her family and friends but we can take comfort in knowing she was an esteemed example of a life well lived.

A visitation for Jeannine will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 from 4-6 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. Funeral Mass 10:45 AM on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at St. James R.C. Church, 429 Route 25A, East Setauket, NY 11733. Interment to follow at St. James Cemetery.
