I've never written a memorial message before and I'm much more comfortable with a glass in my hand so I'm going to make a toast to the John I knew. 
After looking at that great collage the girls and Liam made I started thinking about all the words I would use to describe John.
First thought Smart,  wherever he went he became the resident IT guy.  "John my computer won't print or John I can't get on the internet"
Between his own house, my uncle's and when he would visit us I think he could have made a full time job of fixing our computer issues.  
John is the guy that could make sense out of any instructions. From kids toys to ikea furniture to trampolines to building a deck from scratch. Smart, I'm not going say genius, I'll reserve that for his grandson Liam,   there's greatness there. But smart, a damn site smarter than me. 

Hilarious- John had the rare combination of quick wit and a dry sense of humor that was very entertaining. 

Even tempered - he wouldn't get riled up by the things that would absolutely drive other people crazy. 
I'd almost say mild mannered but he certainly new how to make his presence felt when the situation called for it. Not that it would happen often but there were a few times he would remind someone that he was 6 ft 3 and 240+ lbs. That could be down right intimidating. 

Driven - he went back to school to get his degree as an adult. He earned his masters while working a full time job and supporting a family. Not a lot of people could do that but he set a goal and went for it. 

He was proud but not boastful, compassionate, he enjoyed sitting down with a bratwurst and a good German beer and he was just what I would call a stand up guy, but more than anything else he was the ultimate family man.
He and Lynn spent 30 great years together and built an amazing family. They complimented each other perfectly, taking turns between being the straight man and funny man.  Watching them together I would describe them as being thoroughly amused by each other even after 30 years. 
He raised 3 girls that he was immensely proud of. He raised them right and I see a lot John in each of them,  how smart they are, how compassionate how kind they they are to other people and how strong they've all become. 

I've heard the word shocked a lot in the last few days. It was so unexpected, its a damn tragedy.  This was an important person, important to me and to everyone else that knew him and to say he will be missed is a tremendous understatement. His time here was too short but luckily it was still long enough for to make some lasting memories for him and for us. He walked a daughter down the aisle, went on many family vacations, saw proms, graduations and sweet sixteens and he took great pleasure in them all. 

Those memories will always be with me and Lynn and his girls and his  grandson and all of his family and friends. That's how he lives on. 
Next time you're working on a project or trying do something and you hit a wall. Take a moment and say, what would John do? Let his calm demeanor and common sense guide you. 
Always remember him.
