John F. Maher Jr.
December 17, 1933 – March 10, 2021
John F. Maher Jr. 87, of Stony Brook, N.Y passed away on March 10, 2021. “Jack” was born in Plainfield, N.J to Philomena Perretti and John F. Maher Sr. He was the eldest of four children; Mary Patricia Wilson, Phyllis Ann Meyers and Thomas Joseph Maher.
He grew up as a renaissance man; he took tap dance lessons, sang, played the accordion as well as rebuilt car engines and did masonry work with his grandfather. Jack joined the army after high school and served for two years.
At the age of 21 Jack attended Penn State University. He loved sports and while at college he was an amateur boxer and wrestled all four years. He graduated after majoring in electrical and mechanical engineering. Jack then took a job at Litton Industries in California building potentiometer sensors.
At the age 27, Jack fell in love with Cathryn (Cassie) Mallinckrodt. They had four children; Michael Thomas, James Patrick, Dawn Kathryn and John Francis III. They moved to Commack, then Setauket where he raised his family and eventually to Stony Brook, NY. In 1965 he started his business, Betatronix Inc where he continued manufacturing potentiometers.
One of Jacks’ passions was golf. Jack and family joined St Georges in 1977. He was very involved there; Greens Committee, Admissions Committee and President for 8 years. He continued to be a member until his death.
After 30 years at Betatronix, Jack sold his business and worked for his son Mike over the next 20 plus years until his passing.
Jack was known as a straight shooter, a devout Catholic and an honest gentleman. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Jack and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family. Jack was a caring husband, loving father and a big-hearted grandfather.
Jack is survived by his loving children; his son Michael and wife Patricia; his daughter Dawn and son John; his beloved grandchildren; Jamie, Blake, James (JP) and Bridget. His sisters Pat and Pam, her husband Bob and brother Tom. He was preceded in passing by his wife Cassie, son Jamie and brother-in-law Jack Wilson.
The funeral service will be held at Saint James Catholic Church in Setauket, NY on Saturday, April 24 at 11:00am.
