Katherine Buch Doukas of Port Jefferson Station, beloved mother and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on November 5, 1941, in Croatia of German Donauschwaben ancestry, her family then fled to Austria during World War II following her immigrating to the United States when she was 15.
Katherine was the devoted mother of Melissa Koflanovich and Anthony Doukas, and the loving grandmother of Melanie and Bryan Koflanovich. Her family was her greatest joy, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She had an unwavering commitment to nurturing those around her, always putting their needs before her own.
An avid cat lover, Katherine’s home was filled with warmth and companionship. Her cherished cat, Milo, was her best friend, while Coco and Patches, the neighborhood strays, were welcomed with open arms as she awaited their daily visits.
Katherine was renowned for her incredible baking skills, creating authentic Austrian desserts that delighted family and friends. A true foodie at heart, she loved watching cooking shows and feeding anyone she encountered, including her beloved pets—even if they weren't hungry. She enjoyed her coffee with a splash of Baileys and had a sweet tooth for all things sugary. Gardening was another passion; she tended to beautiful flowers, with pink carnations being her favorite.
She found joy in simple pleasures: watching the sunset at the beach, indulging in chocolate, savoring a ripe watermelon, and enjoying her grandchildren's moments, from haircuts to visits from their friends. Katherine was also a lover of music, often listening to German folk tunes and the melodies of Johann Strauss. A fan of tennis, she admired Roger Federer and delighted in cooking her grandchildren’s favorite meals when they came home.
Earlier in life she loved to travel. She went cross country skiing, camping and hiking across the Country, but Upstate New York remained her favorite place in the world to visit. Katherine kept up with current events, watching the news daily, while also enjoying lighter fare like Dancing with the Stars.
Katherine will be remembered as the most selfless person, whose kindness and warmth touched everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and the beauty of appreciating life’s little things.
In her honor, we remember her unwavering spirit, and the love she so freely gave. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Katherine's life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 2-4 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776.
