Mike was born October 13, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio. He left home at 18 to pursue a career related to his interest in the medical field. He moved to Philadelphia and studied Inhalation Therapy at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia in 1966, where he met his future wife, the late beloved Katherine Rickard. Mike & Kathy were married on July 26, 1969 and were married for 52 years until her death in 2021.
Personally, Mike enjoyed a number of interests, including all-things technology, 3D printing, sushi, fishing, kayaking, music and was an accomplished drummer. He was never shy to share his opinion on a matter. He was a kid at heart, loved a good and slightly off-beat joke or prank. He wouldn’t balk at a chance for a bit of adventure, like salmon fishing in Alaska, traveling to the USSR & then Russia in the 90’s, or doing a ropes course & ziplining with his kids in his 70s.
Academically, he received his associates degree in Respiratory Therapy from Nassau Community College in 1972 and his Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration from St. Joseph’s College in 1985.
Professionally, Mike led a distinguished career in the respiratory therapy field. He published often, was award winning in his field, lectured, was an avid researcher and was involved in product development of aerosol delivery products.
He was the Director of Respiratory Care/Pulmonary Function/Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University Hospital for 21 years, from its opening in 1979 until his “retirement” in 2001. Mike always embraced technology and searched for ways to use it to better serve those most in need. He became involved in product development of aerosol delivery products, which took him out to the LA area for several years with Healthline Medical. After a stint at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center / Miller Children's Hospital from 2008 to 2011, he returned home to Long Island to work remotely for the Tucson AZ based company WestMed. Here he had a major and diverse role in the development and commercial release of Westmed's Vibralung® Acoustical Percussor and the achievement of its FDA clearance in 2014.
For the past several years he’s been working as an independent Respiratory Therapy Consultant & Educator, in addition to working with Dr. Gerry Smaldone as an Aerosol Research Scientist / Respiratory Therapist in the Aerosol Laboratory of the Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Division of the Department of Medicine, where he contributed to conducting studies of aerosolized medication delivery.
More recently, after receiving a 3D printer from his children as a Christmas gift, he used it as a platform to continue his pursuits of finding solutions to not only move respiratory care forward, as well as find fun, interesting and entertaining ways to improve everyday life. His grandchildren especially appreciated many of the whimsical objects he created for them.
Mike is survived by his son Michael and his wife Laura, his daughter Mary-Anne Segal and her husband Jon and his daughter Teresa Fryer and her husband Bob, cherished grandchildren Abigail, Emily, Ryan, Luke, Eleanor and Madelyn, adored brothers Steve, Dave and Jack, who will all miss him very much.
A memorial visitation for Mike will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at O. B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Hwy, Port Jefferson Station, New York 11776.
