Passed away at his beloved home in Hospice Care, on July 25, 2021. During the night the good Lord called him home to be with him and his beloved mother Sadie Mae Matthews.
Tom was born on January 3, 1958 at Harlem Hospital. He was the son of the late Thomas Matthews and Sadie Mae Matthews. Tom was the eldest of three children.
Tom graduated from Samuel Rompers Vocational and Technical High School, Bronx, NY
Tom went on to attend Bronx Community College where he received his Associates Degree.
Tom met Debbie while working at WNYC-TV; she worked for the Dept. of Finance. They met when she and her friend Jennifer, went to the wrong floor to look at the job board for new opportunities.
Tom escorted the two women to the right floor. Two hours later he went to look for Debbie, to ask her to lunch in April 1987. Tom and Debbie were married on October 21, 1994, moved into their home in Port Jefferson Station on October 31, 1994.
Tom and Debbie’s lunch date has lasted 34 years. They will be on lunch for his eternity.
Tom worked at WNYC-TV the City of New York Channel.
Part-Time he was a cameraman for Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniel’s, as the Host. TV 12, Long Island, The Broadcast Museum in Manhattan, Cablevision, Madison Square Garden and CNN as a Broadcast Engineer.
Tom enjoyed fixing things from the time he was a child. His mother often spoke of his breaking lamps and other objects just so he could put them back together. Tom enjoyed working with his hands including repairing sprinkler heads, dishwashers and any other repairs he’d figure out how to fix.
Tom was a true friend and loved telling stories of his time working with Ralph, filming some of his upcoming Hip Hop stars in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Tom also enjoyed tinkering with computers, playing video games, listening to Hip-Hop and R&B music, looking at old movies on TCM.
Tom had an infectious laugh always willing to help neighbors in need.
His parents and his brother Eddie preceded Tom in death.
Surviving Tom are his wife, Debbie, sister Darlyn Rogers, Brother-In Law Phillip Rogers, Nephew Toro and Niece Dara, Brother-In-Law Robert Shells, Mother-In Law Rosetta Shells Hitchens
And a host of Cousins and beloved friends.
Reposing at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, LI. A visitation for Thomas will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM . Prayer service at 12:30 PM. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Liberty Street, Port Jefferson, NY 11777.
