Biography

Bernice Irene Neill Matson, departed this life Thursday, January 31, 2019. She was born Sunday, December 26, 1920 in Port Lavaca to James Culbertson Neill and Zella Clarissa Osburn Neill. She married Raymon Harold Matson on January 11, 1938.
Being a farmers daughter, she began chopping corn and cotton at an early age. At 10 years of age she began picking cotton every summer until she married. After she married she raised hogs, had chickens to sell eggs, had 8 cows that were her full responsibility if her husband was working in the field. She milked the cows, ran the cream separator and churned butter to sell. She sold Watkins products door to door, had house parties to sell cooking utensils and ladies fashions.
Bernice and all her family became members of Salem Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and occasionally played the organ.
Later, when she and Raymon purchased their farm and moved to Bloomington she transferred her church membership to First United Methodist Church of Bloomington. Here she taught Sunday School and participated in many of the church programs, seldom missing the weekly domino games. Here, she considered every member as a friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 step-mothers, Rose Neill, and Alberta Neill; husband, Raymon Matson; sister, Ruth Halk Williams; half-sister, Roberta Crissman; brother, James Morris Neill; and a son, Charles Raymon Matson Sr.
She is survived by 2 half-brothers, Thurman Neill, Louis Neill; daughter, Judy Anderson; granddaughter, Lynette Darst; grandsons, Charles Matson Jr., Alan Anderson, and Richard Freychineaud; 7 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca.
