Gilbert G. Sanchez

PORT LAVACA – Gilbert G. Sanchez, 89, died in Port Lavaca on April 21, 2015, after a battle with cancer. Born in Vanderbilt, Texas, he was the youngest of seven children born to the late Manuel and Josefa Sanchez. He joined the United States Navy, and is a World War II Veteran serving in the South Pacific and Philippines. He worked for the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in New Gulf, Texas as a Warehouse Foreman. He was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church and VFW Post 4403. Gilbert had a passion for baseball, and enjoyed cheering on his favorite team the Houston Astros. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and hunter; when he wasn’t out in the water, he enjoyed spending time in his garden or taking in the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Janie G. Sanchez; daughters, Stella Resendez (Manuel), Iris Martinez (Ramiro), Helen Ramey (Paul); sons, Gilbert Sanchez Jr. (Rosemary), Hector Sanchez (Patricia), Xavier Sanchez (Marcela); nephew Andrew Sanchez Sr; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Estefana Diaz; brothers, Eliseo Sanchez, Salvador Sanchez, Cruz Sanchez, Francisco Sanchez, and Lucio Sanchez; and nephew Elias S. Diaz.

A visitation will be held Friday, April 24, 2015 from 5-7 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca. Funeral mass will be Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 12 noon at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Veterans Joint Honor Guard will follow in Greenlawn Gardens.

Pallbearers are Michael Resendez, David Herrera, Justin Sanchez, Matthew Sanchez, Jared Ramey, and Ramsey Martinez.

Honorary Pallbearers are Paul Resendez, Sammy Resendez, Norbert Sanchez, Robert Herrera, Brett Ramey, and Xavier Sanchez Jr.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Our Lady of the Gulf Capital Campaign or the American Cancer Society in his honor.
