Kathleen Albertina Kovarek, 93, peacefully went to be with our Heavenly Lord on the morning of January 31, 2024, in her home in Port Lavaca, Texas. She was born on November 2, 1930 in Brenham, TX to Willie Frederick and Thekla Sunderhuse and was the 9th of 11 children.
She married the love of her life, Wilbert Albert Kovarek, on January 10, 1957 and were happily married for 57 years until he passed in March of 2014. Together they had 5 children: Judy Farrow (Mark), Karen Meyer (Doug), Wanda Zwerschke (David), Dwayne Kovarek, and Shawn Gray (Joe). Kathleen and Wilbert’s legacy continues with 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Kathleen loved to work with her hands–she enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and embroidering beautiful works of art. She won numerous grand champion, reserve champion, and blue ribbons in the county fair for her embroidered pieces and other works of art. She enjoyed listening to Polka music and waltzing away on the dance floor with Wilbert. In fact, Kathleen and Wilbert met at dance in Fairchild, Texas. She was proud of her heritage and being full-blooded German she could understand and speak German. Although she left high school early to help out on the family farm to pick cotton and milk the cows, she did not lack experience and wisdom. She was a devoted mother and served as a teacher to her children ensuring they all knew how to write cursive. She is remembered for her generosity and selfless giving. She touched the lives of many and will be missed dearly.
