Olivia – Ola Mae Peterson, of Olivia, passed peacefully into eternal life on July 1, 2015, three weeks shy of her 104th birthday. She was born July 20, 1911 in Rosebud, Texas to the late John F. Huddleston and Myrtle Hadley Huddleston.
She arrived with her family in Olivia in September, 1919, at the age of eight, where she attended school and picked cotton for all the local farmers. Eight days after her 17th birthday, she married Oscar Alvin Peterson in Edna, Texas. They made their home in Olivia and quickly became a cornerstone of the community. In the 1940’s, she had the honor of attending a County Extension continuing education program at Texas A&M College.
With a large extended family residing nearby, their home was full of love, laughter and countless memories of holidays and shared meals. She was often found in the garden or kitchen baking and canning, or spending her afternoons sewing, quilting and crocheting. For many years, she prepared daily meals for her parents who lived next door. She passed her love of cooking on to her granddaughters.
For the last 7 years, Mrs. Peterson resided in the Port Lavaca Nursing Home.
She was a faithful and founding member of the Olivia church of Christ, regularly teaching Bible Class to the little ones. She exemplified Christ’s love and was a tireless worker for the Lord. In later years, she became a member of the Port Lavaca church of Christ.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Alvin Peterson; son, David Peterson; and daughter, Roberta Barrier.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Bessie) Peterson and daughter-in-law Frances Peterson. Proud to call her grandmother were nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 3, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Port Lavaca Church of Christ with Shan Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Olivia Cemetery.
Great grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Dallis Peterson, Dakota Peterson, Cameron Giese, Rylan Giese, Dustin Peterson, Austin Cox, Dillon Peterson, Gavin Peterson and August Motl.
