Renee Florene Estes Matejicek, “Nenaw”, 91, of Olivia passed away Monday, May 29, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was born July 24, 1931 in Dallas, TX to the late Rene Raymond Estes and Lowie Combs Estes Kurtz; she was raised in Seadrift, TX. Renee was best known to everyone as Nenaw. She loved Dr. Pepper and reading western books and Grit magazine daily. If you spent any amount of time
with her, you would hear her, on many occasions, reminding everyone that she was sharp as a tack, because she read everyday and that she kept Dr. Pepper in business, because she drank so many of them.
Nenaw’s hobbies included fishing, gardening, planting trees all over her yard in the oddest places, and more fishing. She enjoyed playing bingo, lottery scratch-offs, going to garage sales (sometimes the same one twice in one day), and could eat her weight in fried oysters. Nenaw was a collector of many, many
things, cookbooks being her favorite (though she often made things with no recipe or notes so nobody could ever recreate it, not even her). She loved knicknacks of all kinds and was known for marking her treasures with red fingernail polish so there was no question as to who they belonged to. She loved
raising all animals- breeding and selling Cocker Spaniels, her beloved cat, Geraldine, all of her chickens that she would name individually, her goats, and even her one cow named Charlie, that she could feed out of her hand and could just about ride.
You could often find Nenaw down at the bay in Olivia, fishing and if the fish weren't biting she would spend hours painting the rocks; she kept her fishing poles in the bed of her little black truck and took them with her everywhere, so she was always ready to fish if the opportunity presented itself. She loved watching her grandkids and was protective of each one of them; she would let you know if you did anything to them you would have to deal with her, and that even though she was little, she was “a mean one”.
Nenaw loved going camping and traveling with her kids and grandchildren to the river every year; she enjoyed painting the rocks there, too. In her later years, if anyone was planning a river trip, she would tell them to “bring me home a good rock”. She was the best storyteller and would share her life’s adventures with anyone who would listen to her, for hours and hours.
Renee loved the Lord and attended Bayside Community Church in Olivia, where she was one of the first 18 members when the church was first established. One of her last requests, just two days before she passed, was to call everyone to tell them they better go to church and if they didn’t they would have to answer to her.
Renee is survived by her daughters, Darian Barrera, Renee Behrens, and Allyson Abraham (Scott); sons, Neal Matejicek (Lynn) and Chance Deckard (Kingslee); grandchildren, Courtney Abraham, Melanie Nunley (Hunter), Stephanie Sippel (Billy), Mark Behrens (Victoria), Matthew Behrens, Tyler Barrera (Carolyn), Garrett Barrera, Holt Deckard, Haith Deckard, Holston Deckard, Maddie Deckard, Misty
