The family will receive friends FRIDAY October 25 from 6pm-8pm at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Port Orange.
Craig Justin Morrisey, 29 passed away on Monday, October 21st, 2013 at the home of his parents in Port Orange, FL after a 2+ year courageous battle with a rare pediatric cancer, DSRCT (desmoplastic small round cell tumor).
Craig was born in Halifax Hospital and was a lifelong resident of Port Orange. He was a 2003 graduate of Spruce Creek High School, where he was a member of the JV Baseball team and the Spruce Creek Bowling Team. He continued his enthusiasm for bowling after high school and participated in many local leagues; scoring a number of perfect 300 games.
A graduate of the Daytona State Fire school and a state certified Emergency Medical Technician, Craig was hired at the tender age of 19 by the City of Port Orange Fire Rescue Department, where he worked until recently. He attained the rank of Driver Engineer and was honored and privileged to work alongside his Dad, Butch Morrisey who was also a DE for POFR, until his retirement in 2009.
Continuing with the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, Craig, like his Dad, was an AVID sportsman; always fishing or hunting but the water was both of their passions. A member of CCA (coastal conservation association) he again followed in his Dad’s footsteps and became a Coast Guide certified fishing guide but was never able to fully realize launching his own fishing charter business, “Reel Memories”. Acquiring his love of baseball from his Mom, he began playing Rookie ball at the age of 4 and continued playing into high school. It was a common occurrence during the baseball season for Mom and Craig to discuss the latest happenings surrounding their favorite team, the Atlanta Braves.
Craig is predeceased in death by his paternal grandfather, Larry Morrisey and his maternal grandparents Clem and Mary Rhue Wells.
He is survived by his parents, Butch (Larry) & Felicia Morrisey, sister Michelle Morrisey Edwards (Sonny), his soon-to-be niece Emma Rhue Edwards (due Dec 2013) all of Port Orange, his paternal grandmother Emma Morrisey of South Daytona, his adopted sister Jessika Cohen, Port Orange and his beloved black Labrador puppy, Faith. Also, ever near and dear to his heart, are his beloved brothers and sisters of the Port Orange Fire Rescue Department.
His Uncle “Willie” (Paula) Morrisey of Port Orange and his Uncle Bob Wells of Raleigh, NC. Cousins Kira, Jena & Sami Morrisey of Port Orange and Todd, Dawn, Neil and Jon Wells of the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.
As a further example of Craig’s “love for the game”, personification of his “never quit” attitude and support of all of the children and their families who are valiantly and courageously fighting cancer on a daily basis, in lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made in Craig’s name to Jon Lester’s (Boston Red Sox) NVRQT (pronounced NEVER QUIT) foundation that supports children during their cancer treatments and donates money to find a cure to Pediatric Cancer. Donations can be made at http://www.nvrqt.org/. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.volusiamemorialfuneral.com.
RIP our beloved Craig, calm waters, tight lines and smooth sailing…
