

Darrell Wayne Winsett, 70, of South Daytona, Florida, passed away on January 1, 2020, at Advent Health Daytona Beach after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Hopkinsville, KY, he is the only child of the late Alpha Winsett and Alma Blake Winsett of South Daytona. He is survived by his wife of 33-1/2 years, Brenda T. Culpepper; 2 daughters, Lisa R. Murray of Virginia and Erica W. Riggleman of North Carolina; 1 stepdaughter, Katasha Culpepper of Texas; and 5 grandchildren.
After graduating from high school and prep school, he enlisted into the Air Force where he served 4 years in Plattsburgh, NY. After leaving the Air Force, he attended the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture with a BS and MS(abt). He worked as a Pulmonary Physiologist for the VA in research, and later for at the Tobacco and Health Research Institute with the College of Pharmacy studying the effects of cigarette smoke on the lungs. He then moved to Wright Patterson AFB, where he continued to work in research for the Air Force, Navy and Army. The EPA needed a Pulmonary Physiologist, so he moved his family to Research Triangle Park, NC, where he and his wife worked until they retired to South Daytona, Florida in December 2016.
He was a member of Crossroads Church on Clyde Morris Boulevard in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Family and friends will be received at Volusia Memorial Port Orange on Wednesday, January 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the service beginning promptly at 3:00 p.m. Anyone who would like to share good memories are encouraged to do so at that time. Burial and graveside service will be at Hunt Cemetery in Floyd County, KY. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The American Cancer Society.
