Herman “Herm” Sherwood White, Jr. passed away on August 9, 2019, at the age of 85. Born August 1, 1934 in Donora, PA, Herm lived most of his life in Western Pennsylvania (with a few years in Louisiana and Minnesota) before spending his final years in Port Orange, Florida.
Herm served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He obtained a BA in accounting from Waynesburg State College, and worked as an accountant for US Steel in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Donora, PA, and then a Trustee and member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Elizabeth, PA, and most recently a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Port Orange, Florida. He was a dedicated church member and served as a deacon, overseeing many maintenance projects, and church affairs.
Herm and his wife of almost 64 years, Marge, loved being with people and enjoyed hosting large friend and family events at their two-acre spread in Forward Township, PA. He loved sharing the bounty from their orchard and large garden. He truly enjoyed people, and they felt welcomed and comfortable in his presence. He loved his Steelers, and enjoyed John Wayne and Doris Day. He was proud of his Pittsburgh roots. While in Florida he made many new friends and enjoyed a cool Dairy Queen on Wednesdays with friends.
Most of all Herm loved his family. He was adventurous and ambitious, and he loved to travel with his wife and children. “Dad”, “Pop-pop” liked driving and visiting family, whether it be to family in central Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, or Maryland. He once converted an old school bus into a traveling camper, and he and his dad built a pontoon boat so he could take his family on adventures. He bought a camper and drove the family across the entire country, stopping to visit friends and family on the way.. “Set your goals and be content that you’ve done your best with what you have.”
He is survived by his wife, Margaret White, their daughters Trudy (Bill) Matthews, Cindy (Donno) White, and Cheri (Scott) Heatherington; grandchildren Melissa (Jarrod) Jaffe, Marie (Matt) Antonopoulos, Gwen (Kai) Matthews, Ryan Heatherington, Danielle (Gene) Davis, Whitney (Matt) Stange, Cori Matthews, Timothy (Kaitlin) White, Matthew (Sara) White, and Nicholas "Nick" White; and great grandchildren William Jaffe, Jack Jaffe, Jo Antonopoulos, Cora Antonopoulos, Sebastian “Bash” Davis, Arwen Matthews-Fast, Heath Stange, and Harper Stange; and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
