March 7, 1934 – March 5, 2020
Jacqueline Strand Hermann, 85, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 5th at Halifax Health Hospice in Port Orange. Jackie was born in Decorah, Iowa in 1934 to Lloyd and Lew Ella Strand and was a star basketball player in high school. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Long Beach State (after transferring from Antioch College and moving to Southern California). But, while at Antioch, Jackie met her husband Bill – who she was married to for 62 years before his passing in 2017. She received her Master of Science from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and served as a schoolteacher and psychologist before acquiring and operating 3 separate small businesses (property management, restaurant and retail stores) that were successful ventures. Outside of work, Jackie was an avid golfer, bridge player and volunteer in the community (LPGA Tour Q-School, Daytona Beach State, Guardian ad Litem, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church). She and Bill were considered the longest standing golf members at Spruce Creek and generous with frequent donations. Beyond golf, Jackie and Bill had literally traveled the world and made an oath to see every country they could, while staying healthy. Perhaps Jackie was best recognized for her fitness / walking regimen - which included daily 4-mile walks in the neighborhood and periodically on the beach. A fellow member recently remarked that “when you saw Jackie out walking, you knew it was going to be a good day!” Impressive to note was the strength of Jackie’s will and faith after her beloved Bill died in 2017. Although lonely, she maintained a close bond with friends, neighbors, along with her country club and church communities. However, her greatest sense of pride and joy was spending time with family who visited often. Nothing made her happier than the holiday visits, trips and family reunion celebrations. Jackie is survived by her son John and wife Kristi, and daughter Kathy Lew. Her legacy will live on in her four grandchildren and one great grandchild: Breanne, Christian, Noah, Jordan and Evelyn.
