Jean Alice (Miller) Mattox, 82, formerly of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Benton House of Port Orange, where she resided since February 2022.
Jean was born on October 12, 1940, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Lucas) Miller. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, William M. Mattox, II. She is survived by her three daughters, Peggy Riehm (Jochen) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Judith Wright (Craig) of Newtown, Pennsylvania, and Kathy Orendorf (Jeff) of Orlando, Florida; her grandson, James Thomas Frank, III (Amber) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; and siblings Sara Woltman and Norman Miller.
Jean grew up in Paris, Illinois, and graduated from Paris High School in 1958. She married, raised a family, and worked outside the home, living in Germany, Illinois, and Indiana during the 1960s and 1970s.
Jean and Bill married in 1980 and relocated to Florida in 1986 from Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a bookkeeper by profession and retired in 2014. Jean had a fun-loving personality, never tired of listening to Elvis tunes, and delighted in ice cream treats. She enjoyed gardening, decorating, ironing, shopping, going to church, visiting theme parks, brushing her beloved Lhasa apsos Buffy and Cinni, and most of all—spending time with family. Jean’s love language was acts of service; she was always eager and willing to help family and friends.
The family sends special thanks to the caring staff and friends at Benton House of Port Orange and Halifax Health Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at Spruce Creek Heights Cemetery at Spruce Creek Fly-In, Port Orange, Florida, on May 8, 2023, at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Halifax Health Hospice.
