

John Emmett Turley, 85, of Port Orange, went home to be with the LORD on Friday November 27, 2015. John was born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia, son of Lena (Ashworth) and John Emmett Turley Sr. His father died when he was only five years old, leaving behind John and his three siblings. As the oldest son, he enlisted in the Army as soon as he was eligible, in order to support his family. John honorably served from 1947-1949 during the Korean War conflict. He then married his sweetheart, Sadie Marie Pulley, on December 24, 1951. They enjoyed 63 years together until Sallie’s passing in January. With her by his side, John enjoyed a long and prosperous career with the S.C Johnson Corporation before retiring as their district sales manager. John was an optimist and always believed that we can achieve our dreams if we work hard enough. He was an avid reader and always loved learning new things. He had many hobbies but electronics was of particular interest to him. An avid golfer, John was a founding member of Cypress Head Golf Club. He and Sallie enjoyed playing golf weekly with the couples group and often traveled out-of-town on golf outings with these close friends. John and his wife also traveled abroad to Hawaii, England, and the Greek Isles. John knew the importance of exercise and could often be found at the Port Orange YMCA in previous years. His faith was also just as important. He was an active member at White Chapel of God and sang in their choir. In later years, he was an active member at Covenant United Methodist Church of Port Orange and helped in the formation and growth of Covenant’s mission church, Venetian Bay United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach. The Men’s Ministry at Venetian Bay UMC was especially near and dear to his heart. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted three daughters, Kathryn (Richard) Cooley, Rebecca (Jon) Hyvonen, and Jacqueline (Ronald) Green, along with 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his sisters Janice Edwards and Ruby Timms, and brother Arthur Turley. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday December 13, 2015 at Covenant United Methodist Church at 3701 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange, with Pastor Paul Pollack officiating.
