J. Wayne Scotty, 64, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2012, after his eight month battle with cancer.

Wayne was born July 4, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Norwood High School, and went on to attend the University of Cincinnati. He and his wife moved to Florida in 1977 and started their family in 1980. They opened Halifax Montessori School in 1986 and have owned and operated the Montessori School of Port Orange since 1990. For the past 26 years, Wayne’s passion and mission has been to educate and advocate on behalf of children throughout the Port Orange community.

Wayne was a loving family man who enjoyed attending a great soccer game, participating in a good political conversation, and playing a round of his favorite video game. He was the unforgettable guy at every party and truly enjoyed life… and a great meal.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane Scotty; his daughters, Shea Caffey and Sara Weston; his son, John Scotty; his grandsons, Giovanni Caffey and Madden Weston; his mother Georgia Holzman; his brother, Garry Scotty; and his sister, Kandi Elliot.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange, FL 32129. The family will receive friends and family from 6-7 pm and the service will begin at 7:00. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that all donations be sent to the J. Wayne Scotty Scholarship Fund. Any checks should be made out to the Montessori School of Port Orange and sent to 3749 Nova Road, Port Orange, FL 32129.

I have a lump in my throat as I have found the information of Wayne's passing while doing research on Montessori. I mention to everyone that there has not been a day in all my years of being an educator that I haven't heard his voice with words of wisdom and encouragement.

Dear Scotty family,
Mr. Scotty changed my life, he was there when I had no other male role model, he always gave me the confidence and always believed in me. Diana, you were a great lady to me and I want to thank you and remind you he will always be one of my true hero's. Thank you for all the great soccer memories and I know his son will contiune his legacy. God Bless.

My heart was sad to hear of Wayne's passing. I worked with Wayne back in the early 1990s and today I heard on the radio Rod Stewart's song "Forever Young" and it really took me back to those days. The song would play at the kid's graduation and Wayne would get teary eyed because he loved the kids so much and wanted the best for each one. He was so kind and loving with the kids and his employees. Thanks Wayne for hiring me back then so I can have such great memories. My prayers are with Diane and family

I have watched how Mr. Scotty treated each child and knew each child by name. All the children love him and always wanted to make him proud of them. I will miss Mr. Scotty. Diane, Shea, Sara, John, Georgia, Kandi, Garry, Giavonni, and Madden, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the privilege to call him Uncle Wayne. He was a one-of-a-kind, hysterically funny, giving and caring man and I will miss him.

I am so sad that children will no longer get to see the toy car disappear...its behind his knee. :) I am so happy that my children will be able to read and write at a very young age because of what he taught me. I am forever greatful for all the laughs at work...Thanks for always jumping out from behind things to scare and then laugh at me! and finally, Thanks for just being you, a fantastic husband, father, grandpa, teacher and friend. My heart aches for Diane, and his family. I am a better person having known you. xoxo Wayne
