Lillian McDonald Sweat, 89, entered into glory Monday morning, May 27, 2013. Lillian was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the second of six children born to Lois Pitts McDonald and Bluford McDonald. All of her siblings predeceased her. She grew up in the Atlanta area. She lived in South Daytona for the past 25 years. Her usual occupation was a secretary. Her last employment was with the Douglasville, Georgia Probation Department, but her greatest achievement was as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and her husband Eddie, who died in March, 2012, exemplified the qualities of the Greatest Generation: hard work, self-reliance, loyalty, patriotism and commitment. Lillian met Eddie on a blind date on April 13, 1940 and were married nine weeks later. They modeled true love and enduring romance during their 71 year marriage. In June, 2010, they renewed their vows with all their children and many of their grandchildren participating in the ceremony. They were a wonderful example to all who knew them. Survivors include children Randy (Susan) Sweat of Douglasville, Georgia; Frances (Kenneth) Bates of South Daytona; Richard Sweat of Temple, Georgia; Rev. Keith (Karen) Sweat of Greenwood, South Carolina; sister-in-law and best friend Lynne Hatch of South Daytona; thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, all of whom adored her. Visitation with the family is at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home on 4815 S. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Port Orange beginning at 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 31. Funeral services follow at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be at Volusia Memorial Park in Ormond Beach at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a one-time contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.
