Mary Rose Matthews (née Raymond) passed away on July 30, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on January 22, 1928, in Hallsville, Ohio, Mary lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep commitment to her family and friends.
Mary's professional journey was nothing short of inspiring. She retired as the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Director of Aviation at Dayton International Airport, leaving behind a profound legacy in aviation—a legacy passionately carried forward by her son, granddaughter, and great-grandson, with hopes that her great-granddaughter will follow. Her dedication to her role and her impact on those she worked with remain a source of pride and admiration among her family.
Mary was lovingly surrounded by a family who adored her, including her only child, Michael (Dianne) of Port Orange, FL; three grandchildren, Scott (Michele) of Severna Park, MD, Christopher (Katelyn), of Woodbridge, VA, and Jennifer, of Woodbridge, VA; and five great-grandchildren, Peyton, Andrew (Ava), Olivia, Addison, and MJ. She also leaves behind several cherished nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends, including Dean Steele, of Englewood, OH; Ann Halstead of Vandalia, OH; Delores Dresbach, of Dayton, OH; and Reba Kelley of Amanda, OH. All of whom will deeply miss this amazing woman.
Preceding her in death were her beloved husband of 51 years, Reese H. Matthews; her parents, Clinton G. and Bessie M. Raymond; and her siblings, Nellie Yaple, John Raymond, Ralph (Dick) Raymond, and Joseph Raymond.
A memorial service to honor Mary's life will be held on Wednesday, August 6, at 3pm at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, located at 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange, FL 32129. A Celebration of Life will also be held in Ohio later this year, allowing friends and family from both her past and present to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your animal shelter or cat sanctuary of choice, reflecting Mary's love of animals.
