Nancy was a practicing Catholic. Early in her career, she was an active member of Soldiers Memorial Catholic Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher. Nancy had an extensive career as a caregiver and healthcare provider. She was an avid lover of the beach and all things food. She enjoyed watching programs about cooking, reading cooking magazines, and eating great food (especially sweets) and most of all, cooking for those she loved so dearly. Nancy had a wild sense of humor and a compassion to care for others which was unparalleled, even during times when doing so would have been difficult for herself.
Nancy was the daughter of Leo Peter Gates and Anne A. Gates, mother of Laura Anne Bernal, Michael William Hawkes and Joseph Leo Hawkes, married to Lori Hawkes, and to her greatest pride and delight, grandmother of Joseph Leo Hawkes, Jr. (JJ). She is also survived by her older brother, Leo Peter Gates, Jr., married to Susan Gates.
While her passing from the chains of illness leaves a great sadness with those that loved her, her zest for life, family and food is celebrated and her reunion with her parents and her beloved Heavenly Father brings great peace to her family.
You will be missed, “Bah”, but we know you will always be watching over us and stay alive in our memories and hearts forever.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held Saturday, January 11, beginning at 1:00 pm at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home - Port Orange, with a Celebration of Life/Memorial Service beginning at 2 pm.
