Peter John Uyl was born June 22, 1926, to Cornelius and Johanna Uyl in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died on January 28, 2023 at age 96. He was preceded in death by wife, Josephine (Rozeveld) Uyl and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Pete was raised on the family farm on 68th Street, Dutton, MI, and attended school in Caledonia. Pete served at the end of WW II in the Allied Army occupation in Italy. In 1945, Pete married Josephine (Jo) and were together for 77 years. Pete and Jo worked on the family farm nearly 20 years.
Pete became a carpenter and together they built a home on Gun Lake in Wayland. There they had many friends and enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycle riding and dining out. He always liked being on the water with Jo in a variety of boats including a Thompson, Barracuda, Hallett, Wriedt and after they moved to Florida a Cobia. His fondness for Shepard dogs inspired him to support the Volusia County Police K9 unit over the years.
Pete and Jo enjoyed vacationing in Florida and retired to Port Orange. In 1959, they attended the last auto race on Daytona Beach. They continued following NASCAR racing, attending races at tracks all around the US. They took many cruises, exploring ports and foreign countries around the world. They sailed through the Panama Canal four times. Pete and Jo visited every free country in Europe during various vacations.
Pete will be remembered for his exceeding love for Jo, confident walk and demeanor, big laugh, honest friendship, and engaging conversations.
