On Tuesday, December 26, 2017, God called for Robert B. “Bob” Murray Sr. to join him in heaven. Bob had a great and productive life, leaving behind many friends and family members, including his wife, Jane, sons Robert Jr. and Allan, and daughter Patricia. He was preceded in death by his son, John, both of his parents, Allan and Loretta, and all of his siblings, brother Allan and sisters Marylyn and Helen. Bob was a devoted Roman Catholic and a proud and active parishioner of Our Lady of Hope Church. Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus. However, his health condition restricted him from being an active member of the Church and the Knights in recent years.
Bob and his wife, Jane, lived in the Pelican Bay community of Daytona Beach for 30 years. Bob was very active in the community, serving as a Homeowners sub-association President for many years.
Bob served in the U.S. Army for four years as a Military Policeman. He subsequently had a very successful career as a Department of Army civilian employee. He finished his working career as the Assistant Safety Director for the U.S. Army. Bob was an elite athlete, playing basketball and baseball at the University of Maryland for four years on an athletic scholarship. Bob was a starting center on the basketball court and starting shortstop/first baseman on the baseball diamond. His baseball skills allowed him to play minor league baseball in the Brooklyn Dodger minor league system for a couple of seasons.
For 88 years, Bob was a good, humble, man, a loving husband, a great father and fine example for his children. This was perhaps his greatest achievement in life. His children and grandchildren can continue to relish this.
A funeral Mass will be held for Bob at Our Lady of Hope Church, Port Orange, on Monday, January 8th, at 8:30 a.m. Father Ray O’Leary, a friend of Bob’s, will preside at the service. All of Bob’s friends are welcome to attend the service.
