Devoted and Loved Husband, Father & Grandpa
Edward Smith lived a life devoted to his family – his beloved wife of 52 years Sandra, his sons Christopher and Kevin, his daughter-in-law Raquel, and his grandchildren, Aidan and Ava. Edward was affectionately known as “Big Ed” to his family and friends and he was indeed big in many ways. A big man, a big hearty laugh, and a big heart and capacity to love. Edward worked hard for many years of his life to provide for and take care of his family. He commuted over 2 and a half hours a day, each way, from his home on Long Island into New York City to his job as Director of Management Information Systems with the Long Island Railroad and Metro North Railroad – something he did for years. Edward also attended night school at New York Tech University for 9 years while working full time before finally receiving his Bachelor’s Degree, magna cum laude. Edward’s hard work and perseverance served as an example and inspiration to his family.
Edward loved the outdoors, especially the ocean and the beach. At 50 years old, he attained his scuba certification and for years thereafter enjoyed scuba diving off the coast of California and in Mexico. Edward, as a younger man, received a black belt in judo, which was registered in Japan, and of which he was justifiably proud. And, of course, Edward was a big fan of any events in which his sons participated, whether a play or theatrical event or an athletic endeavor.
Edward and his sense of humor, generosity, and warmth, will be sorely missed by the ever grateful loved ones left behind. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra, who loved him dearly for all of the years of their marriage and tenderly and lovingly cared for him in the final stages of his illness. His sons, Christopher and Kevin, who loved their father and have many great memories of him and many laughs remembering their talks and their time together. And his daughter-in-law Raquel and his grandchildren Aidan and Ava, who were happy to share in his love and affection.
“Eddie” “Dad” Big Ed” “Grandpa” you will be missed dearly by those who loved you but we know you are resting in peace.
