Gatien was born on December 18th 1946 in St Raphaël, Haiti, to Nichold Desir and Eve Suzanne Dorvil. He spent his childhood up to young adulthood in the Carrefour-Feuille neighborhood of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He emigrated to Rockland County, NY in 1970. After a long career in the pharmaceutical industry of over 40 years, Gatien retired to Port Saint Lucie, Florida with his family in 2011. Not wanting to experience the boredom, which he discovered early in retirement, Gatien re-entered the work force part time for the Saint Lucie Transportation department as a licensed operator until 2020.
As a young man he discovered a passion and talent for music. With his little brother on the guitar, he would pick up the microphone, and they would entertain family and neighborhood friends with classic Haitian folk songs. He was so talented and passionate about music that he would eventually join a few bands, among them, Shupa Shupa, Suavecito and Les Fantaisistes De Carrefour. He would even end up recording an album with one of the groups and singing live to hundreds of people at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City. One would say he was born a singer. He will be remembered for his smooth voice that would often remind his Haitian countrymen of their beloved country from another time.
Gatien was a man of many interests. His passion for soccer drove him to travel across the globe to at least three World Cup Championship games, always rooting for his favorite team, Brazil. In America he gained a love for football, where up until he left us he remained a die hard New York Giants fan. He enjoyed world travel and learning about different cultures as well as gardening.
Gatien was a man who was well known and equally well loved. His warm, charming spirit could light up the entire room. He is preceded in death by his parents Nichold Desir and Eve Suzanne Dorvil. He is survived by his wife Claudie Remy-Desir, his brother Jean Claude(Christiane),his sons Guy Robert(Valeria), Carl-Henry(Jessica), Gary, and Jamal; his step-daughter Indirah; his grandchildren Jayden, Jasira, Niyara, Carter, and Cole, and numerous other loving family members. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on forever.
