George Andrew Greig Jr.

Judge Greig devoted his life to serving the people of Allegan County, Michigan. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as an attorney, Undersheriff, and Prosecuting Attorney before being elected Probate and Juvenile Court Judge, a position he held for 24 years. He retired at the end of 2000.

Although he fulfilled many important judicial responsibilities, Judge Greig often said that presiding over adoptions was the most rewarding part of his career. He delighted in making each adoption hearing a joyful and memorable occasion for the children, their families, and everyone in attendance.

George found great joy in officiating weddings for family, friends, and members of the community. Never one to settle for an ordinary ceremony, he brought his own unique brand of fun, humor, and creativity to each celebration. Whether officiating a themed wedding on horseback, a lighthearted "shotgun" wedding, aboard a boat, or in the Allegan town square, George delighted in making every ceremony as memorable and unique as the couple exchanging vows.

His commitment to children and families extended beyond the courtroom. He was actively involved with numerous Allegan County organizations, including CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), and was a strong supporter of foster families. He was also a dedicated member of the Allegan County Players, where he shared his love of theater and community for many years.

Following his retirement, George and his beloved wife, Loretta, enjoyed spending 12 years as snowbirds in Hobe Sound, Florida. At the end of 2015, they made Port Saint Lucie their permanent home. Even after relocating, he remained closely connected to the Ridgeway Theater Group in Hobe Sound.

George was a devoted member of the Bradley Church of Christ. While living on Miner Lake in Michigan, he treasured attending worship services in person. After moving to Florida, he considered it a true blessing to remain connected to his church family through Zoom and live-streamed services.

Above all, George cherished his family. At gatherings spanning four generations, he could often be found surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as he played his ukulele, led everyone in song, or entertained them with his famous "magic tie." His joyful spirit, kindness, generosity, infectious sense of humor, and unwavering encouragement left a lasting impression on all who knew him. The many tributes shared following his passing speak to the remarkable impact he had on countless lives.

George is lovingly survived by his wife, Loretta, his children: Linda (Tim) Eagle; Sheryl (Marty) Bush; Kimberly (Billy) Hineline; Christine (Mike) Anderson Greig; Thomas (Alicia) Greig; Andrew (Heather) Greig; and Angelle "Angie" Skelly.

He is further survived by his 17 grandchildren: Sara, Dennis, Justin, Ashley, Emilie, Richard, Joseph, Tiffany, Katie, Rachael, Noah, Alessandra, Daniel, Allie, Christopher, Brandi, and Alex.

His 12 great-grandchildren include Jordin, Bailey, Liam, Charlotte, Gabe, Benny, Emma, Carter, Lincoln, Bostyn, Alice, and Koa.

George (lovingly known as “Uncle Buzzy”) is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Susan (Ed) Bowen, Debra (Pat) Segrue, Cathy (Rick) Orrico, and Jon (Jill) Gregory and their families.

George not only celebrated adoptions and advocated for foster families, he also lived his life by welcoming people into his heart as family. Among those he cherished were Laura (Tom) Long and their children, Hayden and Carson, and Lyndsay (Manlee) Russell and their children, Logan and Anna, whom he loved as his own grandchildren.

He also treasured the close friendships of Cathy Cummins and her late husband, Butch Cummins, Gordon and Claire Simington, and many others whose lives were enriched by his kindness, love, laughter, and unwavering friendship.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Havens; his parents, George A. Greig and Evelyn Greig; his sister, Beverly Gregory; and his brother-in-law, Ken Gregory.

A memorial service celebrating George's life will be held at a later date at the Bradley Church of Christ in Bradley, Michigan. Service details will be announced when available.
