John Henry Hoffman, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, just four days after celebrating his 81st birthday.
John was born on September 30, 1945, in the Bronx, New York, to John H. Hoffman, Sr. and Marcella Osborne Hoffman. At the age of 10, he moved with his parents to Long Beach, California, where he would grow up, build his career, raise his family, and create a lifetime of memories.
John attended Pius X High School before earning his bachelor's degree from California State University, Long Beach, and later his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Marymount University.
In 1964, John met the love of his life, Teresa "Terry" Leal, at a friend's birthday party. Their first date came after a Notre Dame–USC football game. When Terry commented on what a great game it had been because USC won, John quickly replied, "If you're going to date me, it's Irish all the way." Apparently, Terry agreed!
John and Terry married on August 27, 1966, beginning a remarkable partnership that would span six decades. In August 2026, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Their family grew with the arrival of sons Kurt in 1968 and Brad in 1970, followed by twin daughters Monica and Erika in 1978. Born just two days after John's own birthday, the twins would forever be considered his special birthday gift and would always remain his "little girls." He was a devoted father, always there to offer guidance, love and a hearty laugh. He cherished family vacations and holidays with loved ones at home.
John spent 29 years running the family healthcare collections business before retiring in 2018. Beyond his career, he was affectionately known as Coach Hoffman, having spent many years coaching his children's when they played baseball and softball.
One of John's greatest hobbies was building and enjoying his train layouts. He could spend hours creating and arranging his miniature railroad world in the garage. But anyone who knew John also knew his true sports passions: Notre Dame football and the Los Angeles Dodgers, along with the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers.
John enjoyed life's simple pleasures: swimming; listening to Enya and Loreena McKennitt, enjoying a good cup of tea, and dancing with Terry to KC and the Sunshine Band’s hit song "Brick House." He loved Mexican food, a good steak, Monica's homemade apple pie, Terry's carrot cake, Danish aebleskiver, and sharing stories, jokes & meals with the people he loved.
Some of his happiest travels were to Alisal Ranch in Solvang, California, and the Hawaiian islands. John always dreamed of visiting Ireland and Scotland, although declining health later in life made those journeys difficult.
In 2023, John decided to make Florida his home to be closer to his beloved "Hoffman Ladies"—Terry, Monica, and Erika. During his final three and a half years, he made many wonderful friendships, first at Savona in Stuart and later at Encore at Tradition. During his final months, he resided at Cabana Dunes Assisted Living, where his family was grateful for the precious time they shared together.
Those final days brought memories the Hoffman family will treasure forever.
On Friday, October 2, just two days before his passing, John celebrated his 81st birthday along with Monica and Erika's birthday at Sailor's Return. Surrounded by his Hoffman Ladies, Mike, and family friend Brenda, he enjoyed escargot, lobster tail, carrot cake, and champagne.
It became one of their final and most cherished family celebrations.
On John's final night, he was able to enjoy something that could not have been more fitting: watching both his beloved ND Fighting Irish and LA Dodgers win. His family finds comfort in knowing he passed peacefully after an evening spent doing something he truly loved.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Teresa "Terry" Hoffman; his son Kurt Hoffman and his wife, Angela, and their daughters Maxine and Sofia; his son Brad Hoffman, and his daughter Madisenne, and great-grandsons Aidan and Atlas; and his twin daughters, Monica Hoffman and Erika Hoffman, along with Erika's soon-to-be husband, Mike.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John & Marcella Hoffman.
For Terry, John was the young man she met in 1964, the Notre Dame fan who laid down the rules on their very first date, and the husband with whom she shared 60 wonderful years.
For his children and grandchildren, he was Dad, Grandpa, and Coach Hoffman—a constant presence behind so many treasured family memories.
And for Monica and Erika, he will forever be Dad, the man whose birthday came just two days before theirs and who always considered his twin girls his greatest birthday presents he ever received.
The twins were his birthday gift. His family was his greatest legacy.
John Henry Hoffman, Jr. will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
