John Ronald “Ron” Michals, age 82, passed away on August 26, 2025 with his wife of 41 years and two daughters by his bedside. Ron lived in Port St. Lucie, Florida, moving from the Detroit area after retiring from his 40-plus year career with General Motors. While he loved Michigan and spent weekends and summers boating on Lake Charlevoix and playing golf at Boyne Country Club in northern Michigan, the lure of the ocean, warm temperatures and year-round golf brought him to Port St. Lucie. A devout Catholic, Ron started most mornings with mass at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He loved to usher on Sundays and no one was a stranger, greeting everyone with his easy smile, a twinkle in his blue eyes and a warm handshake or hug. Until recently, he was a member of The Legacy Golf Club where he played multiple times a week.
Ron is survived by his wife Shirley Bauman Michals, his children Melanie Morgan (Greg), Jay Michals (Martha), Julie Schutzler (Jeff) and Jennifer Roberts, 14 grandchildren and his beloved dog Coco, and many other family members and friends. Mass will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette Church, 350 NW California Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34986. A reception will follow immediately after at the church. Ron will be laid to rest in Falls City, Nebraska; a second mass will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 1820 Fulton St., Falls City, NE 68355 followed by his internment and then a luncheon at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Bernadette Church, the Port St. Lucie Humane Society or Dogs and Cats Forever, in Fort Pierce, Florida.
