After graduating St Helena’s high school, she started working for New York Telephone in New York City. She started in the mail room, then moved to secretary, and eventually was put into a special management program for women. From there she was assigned to be a frame foreman overseeing dial tone coming into Manhattan. She retired from the phone company after 30 years' service.
When she was 31 years old, she met her husband Kevin Schuler and was married a year later. Kevin and Mary Ann were happily married for 41 years.
One of Mary Ann’s dreams was to own her own business, so in 1985, Mary Ann and Kevin opened a Carvel ice cream store in Oakland, NJ. Mary Ann managed the store and loved working and mentoring the high school students who worked for her.
In 1995, they moved to Ulster Park, NY. This was her favorite place of all time. From her home she was able to visit Mohonk Mountain House and their beautiful gardens. She was also able to visit Minnewaska State Park. In 2007, she found and adopted Tess, our wonderful Jack Russell Terrier. Whenever it was good weather, Mary Ann and Tess would be seen hiking at either Mohonk or Minnewaska.
Another one of her dreams was to get a college degree. So, she graduated from Ulster Community College with a two-year degree and then graduated from New Paltz State College with a degree in Sociology.
Mary Ann was diagnosed with onset Alzheimer’s in 2014. Moved to Port St Lucie Florida in 2015 to be in a social community where she could interact with more people. Found the wonderful Vitalia community where she made many friends.
Mary Ann passed away on February 20. She will be sadly missed by all her friends and family, but especially her loving husband who stood by her every day.
