Obituary
Anselmo Zayas, better known as Sammy Z, was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico on the 3rd of April of 1944. He joined his sister and brother, Brenda Boyd and Arsenio (Sonny) Zayas, Esq. and mother and
father, Lucia Cintron Boyd and the Rev. Basilio Zayas Soto, in heaven on July 15, 2019. Sammy shared his gift of encouragement and helping, and, his joy for living with everyone he met. He prided himself on
providing for his family, and he never met anyone that he didn’t call a friend.
As a young man, Sammy developed a love for photography and became the family photographer,
always having a camera ready to shoot the many weddings, baptisms, showers and parties. He
rode a motorcycle for many years, ultimately riding the Harley he had always wanted. Sammy was
a real dancer; having taught salsa in New York City during the beginning of this movement, he
moved with soul and grace on the dancefloor, to any kind of music.
Many of his working years were spent around cars; as the first gypsy cab driver in New York City, a yellow cab driver, messenger, a messenger dispatcher, car salesperson, and a finance and insurance manager. He was a true entrepreneur, first selling the daily newspaper as a boy in Harlem, delivering groceries and shining shoes. Sammy’s ventures include a candy store, a coffee truck, New York South, a New York style deli in Downtown Miami and an online startup Ebay store.
His love of birds started in childhood, when he kept and trained homing pigeons on the roof. He
was a self taught aviculturist/ornithologist, successfully breeding and raising exotic birds of all
kinds in addition to growing mangoes, avocados and almonds in the tropical oasis he created in his
Port St. Lucie home he shared with his wife of 45 years, Elena Zayas Soto who survives him. He is
also survived by his brother Charles James Boyd, Jr., elder daughter Amanda King, her husband
Tariq and their children Soraya and Mackenzie, his youngest daughter Andrea Zayas and
granddaughter Mila Fields-Zayas and dozens of nieces, nephews, godchildren, countless cousins,
church family, neighbors, and so many best friends.
He became a devout follower of Jesus in his later years and as such, we know that he has been
warmly and joyfully welcomed in the Kingdom of Heaven. He lived his motto “Live Every Day Like
It’s Your Last” to the fullest by bringing joy and gratitude everywhere he went!

Obituario
bodas, bautizos, celebraciones y fiestas.
