Wesley M. Good, 91, passed peacefully away on June 29, 2020 at the Brennity retirement community in Port St. Lucie, FL. Wes was born January 15, 1929 in Montreal, Canada to Charles and Louisa Good. In his youth, he became a King Scout, the equivalent of a U. S. Eagle Scout, and later served as a member of the Council of Boy Scouts in Quebec and all of Canada in the 1970s and 80s. His children have wonderful memories growing up spending summer vacations at the family cottage on Cape Cod.
Wes attended McGill University, where he played hockey and football. He spent most of his working career as head auditor and Inspector General for the Royal Bank of Canada, traveling all over the world. He then joined the Canadian Red Cross for ten years, this time traveling to disaster areas throughout the world. Once during the fighting in Sarajevo, he narrowly missed death, when the plane on which he was supposed to fly, crashed, carrying down with it his Red Cross medical team.
Possessed of a great sense of humor, Wes pursued many interests, at which he excelled: skiing, ice skating, tennis, sailing, bridge, piano and organ. He enjoyed biking and would go off on weekend trips to Vermont and New Hampshire with a biking, climbing, and camping group, called the Randonnee Aventure Club. The group called him “Mr. Goodwrench,” since he could fix any bike problem. Wes eventually became president of the club, comprised of about 50 members. Also they all enjoyed cooking and decided to put their favorite recipes into a cookbook, “Happy Hikers Haute Cuisine”. Wes was an excellent cook, particularly baking, which he learned from his mother; he thus contributed his mother’s recipe for “Wowie Chocolate Cake,” so delicious and popular. Wowie cake became the traditional family birthday cake passed down to his children and grandchildren.
But Wes’ favorite activity was dancing; as a natural, he never took lessons, and he and his beloved wife Jan did ballroom as well as Latin and attended cotillions at such venues in Wilmington, DE as the Du Pont Country Club and the Wilmington Country Club. They also frequented Le Chambertin in Montreal, the Old Mill Restaurant in Toronto, and the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, anywhere there was live music and a dance floor.
For many years, Wes was a member and then became president (1985-86) of the Fossils Club in Montreal, an all-men’s organization that produced musical comedies, for which the members wrote the script, composed the music, choreographed the dancing, then became the actors, dancers, singers and producers of their shows. They performed eight shows one week a year in a theater in Montreal; all shows were sold out and all proceeds went to a charity that helped disadvantaged children.
Wes was a member of the United Church of Christ in Montreal and the Church of the Advent in Palm City, FL. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Woodward Good in Port St. Lucie; children David W. Good (Lori) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Michael R. Good (Nancy) of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada; and Heather G. Jiujias (Aris) of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada; three grandchildren, Charlotte Neamtu; Marina and Adriana Jiujias; and his sister, Cheryl Good Johnson (Bruce), of Penticton, B.C.
