William L. (Bill) Weber of Port St. Lucie Florida passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at the age of 87. His loving wife Brenda R. Weber, nee Kosa and dog Lacey were with him in his home when he passed away. Bill was born on September 19, 1933 in Beth El Hospital in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Jeanne Weber, nee Goldberg, both deceased. His younger brother Paul Weber pre-deceased him in 1999.
Bill grew up on E. 54th Street in Brooklyn and was a New York baseball fan his entire life. He recalled his youth fondly amongst mostly Jewish, Italian, and Irish families. In a short autobiography he composed, he said that, “As young kids, your religion didn’t mean a thing, we all played together, attended school, built snow fortresses during the winter months, played Stick Ball, Stoop ball, roller hockey, rode the rides that came around on trucks, ate “Bungalow Bar” and Good Humor Ice Cream and in general were allowed to be “Kids”.
A professional musician, keyboardist, and piano player, Bill entertained thousands over a part-time career which spanned more than seven decades. His first band in Tilden High School featured a singer named Sidney Leibowitz, who changed his name to Steve Lawrence and became a famous television and stage act with his wife Eydie Gorme. After high school, Bill and his musician friends played summer gigs in the Catskills. He was a card-carrying member of his local musicians union and had a brief stint playing for an orchestra when he lived in Jupiter, Florida.
He often marveled at the diversity of “day jobs” he had while attending high school, including television antenna installer, TV show script messenger, and cab driver. Since he couldn’t afford to go college full time, he enrolled in night school at Brooklyn College, taking business courses and Music Theory. His daytime job was at American Export Lines as a teletype operator, which came in handy when he was drafted into the Army in January 1954. Bill was stationed in Japan after completing basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ. Hi music background earned him a spot in the Army band and kept him off the front lines. In 2017 Bill joined his fellow veterans in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C., and relished the experience and recognition of his service to his country.
After leaving the Army in 1956 Bill married Barbara Cohen and started a family in Queens, New York, ultimately settling in Jackson and Howell, NJ. He was a regional representative for Broadcast Music, Inc. and a sales representative for Pet Milk before beginning a 30 year career as an insurance broker. During this time Bill was an active member and officer in Temple Beth Am, Lakewood, NJ. Following a divorce in 1985, Bill remarried and remained with Brenda 34 years until his passing.
More than his love of music and life, Bill loved family. In addition to his wife Brenda, he is survived by three children from his first marriage Donna Barron, nee Weber, Lloyd Weber, and Steven Weber; his son-in-law Ami Steinfeld, his daughter-in-law, Ellen Robertson, and his step-daughter Beverly Gordon, nee Grabko, and her partner Ricky Ziv. He loved his five grandchildren, Avery Barron, Jenni Gordon, Sasha Weber, Jared Gordon, and Brian Weber.
The funeral service is scheduled to commence at 3 pm EDT on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Temple Beth El Israel, 551 SW Bethany Dr, Port St. Lucie, FL 34986.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a charitable donation be made in Bill’s honor to two of his favorite organizations, DOGS&CATS FOREVER or the U.S. Olympic Team.
