Winifred H. O’Connor was born in Brooklyn, New York to William and Dorothy Walsh on October 15, 1938. She was the second of seven children. Winnie loved to sing but settled for a job as a secretary at Gulf Oil when her mother refused to allow her young daughter to “tour” with a band.
Winnie met her husband, Joseph O’Connor at a confraternity dance in Brooklyn when she was seventeen years old. They later married on September 6, 1958. After leaving Brooklyn, Winnie and Joe moved to various homes in Long Island, NY, where they raised their family. Winnie was always the devoted Mom, ensuring a wonderful childhood for her four children- Michael, Barbara, Kellie and Brian. She made such a mark on her children’s lives, that every dinner, family trip, birthday, holiday and even a good report card was met with her vibrance, song, humor and wit.
After leaving an office manager’s position at a doctor’s office, Winnie and Joe retired to Hutchinson Island, Florida in 1994 and then moved to various homes in the Treasure Coast area. Winnie was preceded in death by her youngest son, Brian Patrick, who died January 15, 2001 and her husband, Joseph, who died on November 25, 2012. Winnie’s love and spirit will live on in her three adoring children- Michael O’Connor, Barbara
Obarowski (Paul Obarowski) and Kellie Hammond (Paul Hammond), along with her four grandsons- Thomas and Matthew Obarowski, and Brian and Brandon Hammond. She is survived by three sisters- Dorothy Brittain, Janice Bruzzesi, and Patricia Walsh. She also leaves behind her devoted companion, Frank Tumminia, and countless friends and family from New York to Florida.
Winnie was a beautiful lady inside and out. She thought of her family and others first. She was funny, smart, generous and always lit up a room with her smile and charm. Winnie was a class act and displayed strength, a zest for life, and an elegance that will never be forgotten.
WE LOVE YOU MOM!!! PLEASE BE IN PEACE WITH DAD AND BRIAN PATRICK!!
