Millicent, aka: “Millie”, was born to Verna Laura Belcher-Long and Benjamin Charles Long in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up with two older siblings, brother, Terrell, and sister, Adrienne. Millie graduated from Carver High School, where she developed an interest in the art of dance. She enjoyed learning and performing all forms of dance, including modern, jazz and African expressions. Millie performed during and after her high school years.
In the late 1960’s, Millie moved to Portland, Oregon with her young son, Derrick, to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. Soon after, the love of her life, Leonard McGinnis, followed her there. In the early 1970’s, Millie and Leonard welcomed a baby girl, Leilauni. Millie truly loved Portland and, though a city girl, quickly came to feel as at home roughing it in the woods - her family and friends enjoyed many camping trips that Millie planned over the years.
While raising her family, Millie pursued higher education and achieved an Associate Degree in Food Sciences. Her eclectic interests drove her to pursue multiple fields, hospitality & travel being where she would ultimately settle. Over the years Millie always embraced family and friendships. After raising their children and lending a hand with raising many others, Millie and Leonard enjoyed retirement traveling the world.
Millie went to her heavenly home to join her husband, mother and other loved ones on Monday, February 17, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her loving husband, Leonard. Millie leaves behind to celebrate a beautiful life her loving family members: son, Derrick; daughter, Leilauni; bonus-son, Marcus; granddaughter, Abrianna; sister, Adrienne; her loving nephews and niece; and many other family members and devoted friends. Due to current limitation on gatherings, the celebration of life service originally scheduled for May 2nd has been postponed until further notice. Information will be updated as it becomes available.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Millie's name may be made to Portland Rescue Mission.
