Falmouth – Adelaide Lucy Burke, 93, of Portland, died on Saturday July 25, 2015 at Falmouth by the Sea where she had resided for almost 2 years.
She was born on July 2, 1922, the daughter of Antonio and Mary Colucci Dimatteo in Portland Maine. Adelaide was known to all as “Addie” for most of her life. She graduated from Portland High School in 1941. Being raised in Portland, her first job was at WT Grant where she met her “future” husband.
She loved to travel, especially cruises and seeing all the “sights”. New Orleans was one of her favorite places to visit along with some of the Caribbean islands.
Her love of family could not be denied. She devoted her entire life to her husband, her children and then grandchildren AND then great grandchildren. If you met Addie, you would instantly fall in love with her, she had a smile that immediately stole your heart.
She loved to cook (especially baking). She passed on her Italian cookie baking to her oldest granddaughter Amy. She was still creating wonderful dishes up to 4 years ago when her decline from dementia started. Addie was very creative with sewing, knitting and crocheting. She loved to read and would be found at the stove, reading while cooking! When retirement came, she found herself “wintering” in Florida, first in West Palm beach for 20 years and then Dunedin for 10 years. She made many friends along the way.
Addie is survived by her son, John M Burke Sr. and his wife Janice Dorazio Burke. Her daughter Marianne Burke Latini and her husband Peter. Two sisters, Susanne DiMatteo Fasulo and Phyllis DiMatteo Mazziotti. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amy Burke Kalicky, John M Burke, Jr, and wife Diana, Andrea Burke, Matthew Burke and wife Bobbi, Kali Burke, Ian Burke, Jasper Rice and Genevieve, Phillip Latini, Anthony Latini and Marianne Latini Doucette.
Addie was blessed with several Great-Grandchildren. Sadie Kalicky, Sage Kalicky, Gabrielle Burke, Isabelle Burke, Lucia Burke, Michaela Venezio and Arianna Burke.
She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, John “Jack” Burke, her youngest son Anthony P Burke, great grandsons, Austin and Aaron Kalicky. Her parents and her sister Anna DiMatteo Donatello. Addie had a long, good life but she will be sadly missed.
The family wishes to extend our thanks and appreciation of the staff at Falmouth by the Sea for their care and kindness over the past 21 months. Special thanks to Gena, Christina, Andrea and Colleen (Hospice), Linda and Kelly to mention just a few of the folks that were so dear to her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 4-7 PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St. Portland.
