Agatha was born on March 4, 1926 in Springfield, Vermont to Lawrence and Margaret O’Connell. She grew up in Chester Depot, VT and attended school at Mount St Joseph in Rutland, VT. She loved to share stories with her local grandchildren and great grandchildren about her time on the farm as a young girl as well as at MSJ.
Agatha married Charles Spencer on July 31, 1944 and they settled into life in Springfield, Vermont where she worked at Jones and Lamson and raised six children. Agatha and Charlie were married for 60 years prior to his passing in 2004.
She moved to South Portland, Maine in 2010 to be closer to her oldest daughter Rose and her family. She became an integral part of every family celebration and her granddaughters enjoyed frequent shopping trips to discount stores and lunch dates with Grammy.
Agatha was predeceased by her parents, her husband Charlie Spencer, her son Rick Spencer, her brothers Ed and John O’Connell and her sister, Mary Gorman as well as two sons in law, Carleton Barter and Rainer Gunther. She is survived by five children, Roseanne Barter, Monica Gunther, Larry (Kathy) Spencer, Eileen Corrie and Susan (Joe) Fisher, seven grandchildren, Beth (Matt) Whaley, Ellen (Jim) Towne, Jessica (John)Schoch, Chris (Jena) Spencer, Kyle Arnold, Maggie Arnold, and Meghan LeBrun. She also is survived by nine great grandchildren, Taylor, Jack, Marisa, Jake, Alex, Maddison, Cooper, Mary and Madi.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Friday May 28, 2021 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland, ME 04101.
Agatha will be buried alongside Charlie in Springfield, Vt.
