Standish-Alfred “Spike” Philip Tetreau, 85, was reunited with his wife Janice on August 1, 2024. He was born on February 8, 1939 in Portland Maine, the third of seven children of Dr. Francis A. and Eva (Fortier) Tetreau. He attended parochial schools and graduated high school from Cheverus in 1958. While at a high school dance he met and fell in love with Janice Avanzato. They later married on July 11, 1959 and remained in Portland to raise their four daughters. While in high school he worked at Cushman’s Bakery. Out of appreciation of his dedication, Cushman’s was proud to make their wedding cake as a gift.
He later fulfilled a lifelong dream and joined the Portland Fire Department. Serving from 1960 through the late 1970’s, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. During his time of service he made and treasured lifelong friendships. He spent much time in the firehouse kitchen where his cooking skills were honed and enjoyed by the rest of the crew. Pasta “Fazool” was one of his specialties.
Spike had many interests, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting, fishing, and spending weekends camping with family and friends near Pettingill Pond. He and Janice enjoyed spending time in Prentiss Maine with his brothers, sister-in- law, Linda, and dog Roxie. In his later years he loved taking long drives with Janice to nowhere. Most recently you were apt to find him on the back deck baking in the sun, or hanging out on his riding lawn mower.
He retired after working until the age of eighty from the Deering Pavilion where he served as a maintenance man. He was a dedicated lifelong New York Giants fan as well as the best husband, father, and grandfather anyone could wish for.
Dad was easy to be around and he so loved going to visit his kids and grandkids houses. He enjoyed keeping up with whatever household project they had going on, and loved to hear about their day to day lives. He was so proud of each and every one of them and he could show his love with just a quiet smile, which will be dearly missed by the ones he left behind.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Janice, his parents, brothers Tom and Bill and sister Patty and also by his son-in-law Mike “Fish” Fichman. He also lost many of his close friends through the years.
He is survived by his daughters Sharon Tetreau, Renee Lewis and her husband Keith, Diane Romano and her husband Dan, and Paulette Fichman. He also leaves his grandchildren Janice Pramis and husband Nick, Justin Wallace and wife Kara, Wendell Grant and wife Lindsay, Chris Conley, Cosmo Romano and his partner Dez’Ree, two great-grandchildren Atreyu Grant and Killian Conley, his brothers Dick, Paul, and Fritz and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial service on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A reception will immediately follow the service.
