Allan Lawson Martin, 85, passed away peacefully at home in Falmouth, Maine on the afternoon of August 10, 2024. Al greeted the day with energy and a smile right up until the end. He is predeceased by his first wife Sally Foote Martin and his sister Janet Nichols. Allan was born June 5, 1939, in Newton, Massachusetts to Beatrice and Howard Martin. Allan attended Newton High School, where he was Captain of both the Varsity Baseball and Basketball teams. He was elected President of the Newton High Student Council his Senior Year. He was ultimately inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in baseball. Following high school, Allan played baseball in the Cape Cod League, after which he was offered to try out for the Boston Red Sox. Instead, he chose to attend Harvard University, making him the first man in his family to attend college. During his time at Harvard, he continued to play baseball, captaining the team his Junior and Senior years. He was presented the Friends of Harvard Baseball “Most Effective Man at Bat” Award both his junior and senior years. He later completed Harvard Business School after serving three years in the United States Navy. In 1961 Allan married his high school sweetheart, Sally Foote Martin. They enjoyed 51 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2012. Allan and Sally moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine in 1977 to raise their three children. Allan was devoted to his family and always eager to be involved in his children’s various activities. He enjoyed hosting parties and other occasions including holidays, weddings and cookouts. He loved playing squash, and skiing with his family at Sugarloaf. He also enjoyed quiet nights at home with family. In 1985 Allan and his brother-in-law, William Nichols, bought the George R. Roberts Company which Allan owned for 30 years before he retired. Allan, known by friends as Al, was known for his humor and laughter. He laughed on his porch during the summer in Cape Elizabeth; he laughed on the golf course, where he could be found almost every week with his close friends Steve Sunenblick, Bill Webster and Bob Dall; he laughed every Christmas Eve when he and his good friend, Bruce Coggeshall, exchanged gag gifts. He was always finding joy in the moment and that is perhaps how he will be best remembered. Allan’s charming wit endeared him to all, and his charisma contributed to his many lifelong relationships. After his wife Sally passed away in 2012, Al found new love with Jackie Curley, and spent the remainder of his years with Jackie until his passing. They enjoyed spending winters in Florida, and traveling to France, where his high school French served him well. They married in 2020. Al’s indomitable spirit and zest for life persevered through adversity as it did throughout his life. His determination and unique sense of humor was admired by his invaluable caregivers and therapists whom he managed to charm in no time. Jackie and the family would like to thank these very special workers whose efforts allowed Al to enjoy every day, maintain his strength, and keep reading. Al is survived by his wife, Jackie; his son, Tom Martin and his partner, Lucie Scholz and their two children, Luke and Layla; his son, Bob Martin and his wife, Emily and their three children, Mary, Hannah and Tess; and his daughter, Katie McCoy and her three children, Sally, Will and Brady; his nephew Bill Nichols III; his niece, Judy Paul and her husband, Karamjeet; his niece, Susan Nichols and his sister-in-law, Charlotte Skeggs. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Portland Country Club on Route 88 in Falmouth, Maine on September 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. Al loved walking Mackworth Island in Falmouth and did it daily until he couldn’t. The family would like to fund a Memorial picnic table and plaque at Mackworth Island for Al. In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to the “Allan Martin Memorial Picnic Table”, 19 Applewood Lane, Falmouth, Maine 04105. Any contributions in excess of the cost will go to supporting Mackworth Island.
