

Anna Marcus Stillman died February 23 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born May 27, 1918 in Portland, Maine to Saul and Bertha Marcus. Anna grew up on Munjoy Hill and graduated from Portland High School in 1936. She attended Westbrook Junior College and supported this institution through various volunteer activities. She loved her hometown and was an avid storyteller about the history of Portland.
Anna married Joseph Stillman in 1943. She was a patriotic war bride who worked with other women to support the men and women overseas. At the end of the war, Anna proudly greeted Joe in Portland accompanied by their first-born son.
Active members of Temple Beth El, Anna and Joe worked tirelessly for the community. Her home was open to friends and family who relished her loving care and delicious cooking.
Anna was a loyal and loving friend to many with whom she shared her sense of humor and spirit of adventure.
An active volunteer at Maine Medical Center, Anna was also a member of Portland Country Club and Riverside Municipal Golf Course. In her later years, Anna was a devoted “grandmother volunteer” to children at Reiche School and East End Community School in Portland.
Anna is survived by her brother Myer M. Marcus, son David and his wife Barbara, son Neal and his wife Lorry, four beloved grandchildren and four adored great-grand children, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a funeral service at Temple Beth El on Friday, February 25 at 12 noon. The family will observe a period of mourning Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. at 160 Craigie Street, Portland, Maine.
